The Nueces County Rural Rail Transportation District was established by the Nueces County Commissioners Court on May 23, 2001. This governamental entity utilizes and improves rail systems for economic benefit in Nueces County. Its board consists of five directors, four of which are appointed by the Commissioners Court, and serve for terms of two years. The Rural Rail District qualifies for private, state, and federal funds to develop the infrastructure necessary to assure the most efficient and economical movement of essential agricultural products from the areas of production to the local, national, and export markets.
